The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa is a center of modern art that hosts numerous exhibitions of international importance. There are works of futurist artists on display, some of which you can touch which makes the museum an interesting and interactive visit for young children as well as adults.

The building itself was designed by Sejima Kazuyo and Nishizawa Ryue, two architects whose work won them the Pritzker prize in 2010, a title akin to a Nobel prize for architecture. Aesthetically minimalist and spacious, the museum characteristically abolishes the notion of boundaries. The interior and exterior are subtly erased, inviting you to wander around the exhibits: Visitors` paths cross as they pass through the various entrances and halls, cafes and restaurants as well as the specialist book library.

The contemporary art museum was built to also serve as a public zone for the people of Kanazawa. Thanks to new projects developed by the museum the public can freely participate in educational, creative, leisure and communicational activities. Especially during “golden week” (the end of April /early May). The Golden Marubi week is an opportunity for the local inhabitants to come to the museum and surrounding park for various workshops, concerts, open air tea ceremonies, a market and other activities for young and old alike. There is a similar event, Marubi de party, during the week around the 9th of October to celebrate the museum`s anniversary.

The museum ticket can also be used at local stores, cafes and restaurants (that carry an orange logo of a bird`s eye view of the museum) to benefit from special offers. The advantages vary depending on the establishment (5% discount, a welcoming drink, etc.) and the list of participating stores can be found at the entrance to the museum.
