Decorating the Kaga Hachiman Okiagari, a traditional folk doll

The Kaga Hachiman Okiagari is a self-righing doll traditionally made in Kanazawa. Considered to be good luck charms, these dolls are also designated as one Kanazawa’s valued traditional crafts. These dolls are available in most shops in Kanazawa, but you can also try your hand at making one yourself!

You can try drawing doll’s face at Nakashima Menya, a local traditional toy shop. If you would like to, you can try drawing the doll’s entire body however you like. A doll resembling a friend, family member, or a favorite manga character makes a unique souvenir! You can also see the craftsmen applying fine brush strokes to make the doll’s face in the shop.

Nakashima Menya is located across from Omi-cho Market, down Owari-cho Street, renowned for its well-established shops.
